While the big purple grapes and full vines are what you see most \u201cWine Country\u201d pictures feature, there is so much more to the life-cycle of a vine (and in turn, your bottle of wine). At each step, our winemakers, vintners, and growers, are out in the vineyards tending to and nurturing the grapes and vines. Let\u2019s take a look at what our Livermore Valley vineyards looked like through 2017 with photos from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merridithphoto.com\/#!\/blog\/harvest\">Merridith Robertson<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_1295.1.jpg\"><img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/IMG_1295.1.jpg\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Vines are dormant in the winter months, until they begin to \u201cweep\u201d with sap around February signaling the waking up of the vines.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/03_Vine-Landscape.jpg\"><img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/03_Vine-Landscape.jpg\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFirst signs of bud break comes in March as the wildflowers appear and grass begins to turn green with the occasional rain.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/05-Landscape.jpg\"><img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/05-Landscape.jpg\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nSpring has sprung with foliage beginning to develop and shoots growing up and out of the vines during April.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/05_Vine-Fruit.jpg\"><img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/05_Vine-Fruit-683x1024.jpg\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nApril\u2019s showers bring May\u2019s clusters. These tiny green clusters will bloosom into grapes, giving first indications of the potential size of the 2017 crop.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/06_berries-bigger.jpg\"><img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/06_berries-bigger.jpg\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe clusters turn to berries and you will see the vines canopies continue to grow in size during June. Rain can be precarious during this time for our growers, as they worry about flowers being knocked off the clusters, meaning loss of fruit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/07_Vine-Verasion.jpg\"><img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/07_Vine-Verasion.jpg\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIn July we begin to see \u201cveraison\u201d, when the berries begin to slowly turn red. Winemakers and growers will often walk through the vineyards and \u201cdrop\u201d or cut off the fruit that is not ripening at the pace they would like, to give additional resources to the fruit that they keep on the vine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/08-Landscape.jpg\"><img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/08-Landscape.jpg\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nBy the end of August, grapevines are full of fruit and wineries are preparing for Harvest. Livermore Valley\u2019s first pick was on August 25th in 2017.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/09_Vines-and-fruit.jpg\"><img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/09_Vines-and-fruit.jpg\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nFruit continues to ripen, with winemakers checking nearly daily and sometimes hourly during the month of September. Each vineyard and varietal ripens at it\u2019s own pace, and each winemaker decides when to pick based on the sugar and acid they would like in that certain crop.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/10_Tractors.jpg\"><img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/10_Tractors.jpg\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nDuring October, the last grapes are being picked from the vines and leaves are beginning to turn with the season. Cellars are full of fermenting grapes, winemakers are doing daily punch downs while simultaneously excited and exhausted.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/11_Leaves.jpg\"><img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lvwine.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/11_Leaves.jpg\" title=\"\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nOnce November hits, the leaves become a festive fall backdrop, cover the ground, and the vines begin to go dormant for the winter.<\/p>\n<p>It is all about the journey, isn\u2019t it?
