Each Wednesday, one Livermore Valley Winery is selected to represent our “Winery of the Week” by hosting a Wine Wednesday celebration. The selected winery is open on Wednesday from 5-8pm to help guests wine-down from a hefty work week, or just grab a taste of wine before heading out to a fabulous dinner! The California Super Bloom is an awe-inspiring event that occurs when a large amount of rain falls in an area that is usually dry and arid. Super blooms are much more intense than regular blooms due to the abundance of water and nutrients available for the flowers. The extra water helps fertilize the soil, allowing the plants to take full advantage of any sunlight they receive. In addition, this abundance of moisture helps create favorable conditions for pollinators such as bees and butterflies which further contribute to the growth and spread of these colorful displays. Benefits can include access to limited release wines which tend to be small lot and passion projects of the winemakers, attending private tastings in the winery cellar or touring vineyards on a winemaker-led tour. Wine blending is the art of combining different grape varieties to create a particular flavor profile. It’s an important step during winemaking to produce a unique and complex wine, as each variety brings its own set of characteristics to the blend. Winemakers strive for balance, using their knowledge of how certain grapes interact with one another to craft a harmonious final product. Red blends are known for their exciting and intricate flavor profiles. A combination of flavors can be much more diverse than any single variety could offer, allowing for greater complexity and depth in the resulting taste. For example, a red blend may include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Zinfandel or Petite Sirah which all bring their own unique flavors to the mix such as berry notes from Cabernet Sauvignon or spice from Syrah. International Syrah day celebrates the bold, full bodied varietal with a unique and complex blend of flavors. Syrah explodes with notes of cracked black pepper, smoky bacon, dark blackberries, and cassis. The tannins are typically structured yet soft on the finish. Livermore Valley’s warm climate and rocky soil produces intensely flavored wines that are perfect for aging.   Syrah is best enjoyed with hearty grilled meats, such as steak or lamb, as well as bold cheeses like camembert and blue cheese.
